Rousseau's theory proposes that humans were neither moral nor vicious, and that our greed, war and even love for each other, are results of the complexities of life and modern man and were not really present before the formation of society. Rousseau suggests that all human were simple and had no culture and mature thought prior to their social and cultural development and this implies that there was a development given by civilization and the complexities that goes with it eventually leads to moral decline. He also states that when humans pass from a state of nature to a civil state justice is substituted for instinct and they adopt morals and this means that upon reaching this stage, humans no longer act on impulses but they actually begin to act out of principle.
