Hofstede (1993) stated that some economists used "management" to describe a process and "managers" to describe persons involved. Management in the American sense is a class of people—a class of people that boys and girls look up to and aspire to the role. In the United States, the manager is a cultural hero. Hofstede stated that in Germany, manager is not a cultural hero. However, managers in Germany are expected to assign tasks and to resolve technical problems—they are considered the engineer. In Japan, the core of the Japanese enterprise is not the managers, but the workers who have worked and will be working for the enterprise for a life-long period. Hofstede stated that Japanese are mostly controlled by their peer group, not the by their manager. He continued that they usually ask American students who come for business courses in Holland their ideal job after graduation and views of students from Dutch on the same topic, they receive significant difference in the answers provided by the two cultures.
