Chapter Summary
Chapter Title: The Positioning School: Strategy Formation as an Analytical Process
Source: Strategy Safari: A Guided Tour through the Wilds of Strategic Management
Authors and Date of publishing: Henry Mintzberg, Joseph Lampel and Bruce Ahlstrand, 1998

Introduction
Strategy formation is a dynamic and complex process that considers the external and internal factors of an organization in the decision making process. Strategy formation though can be considered from various perspectives. Mintzberg, Lampel and Ahlstrand (1998) present ten schools of thought on what strategy is. This paper summarizes one of their ten schools of though: The Positioning School in chapter four of their book Strategy Safari: A Guided Tour Through The Wilds of Strategic Management.

Summary
This school which originated from military strategy and thinking (for example von Clausewitz's On War and Sun Tzu's The Art of War) views "strategy formation as an analytical process" in which there is a combination of offensive and defensive moves (pp. 82-87). The positioning school placed a limit on only key strategies that were important in positioning an organization at the most desirable place in the economy, one which can in future be defended against any emerging competitors. Applying this school of thought across industries it came to be known as the generic strategies of positioning.

Premises of the Positioning School
With the view that strategies have to be tailor made and unique to an organization, the positioning school developed various analytical tools that could be used to match the right strategies to the conditions surrounding the organization in the industry such as Porter's generic strategies, game theory, Porter's value chain, Growth share index, among others. The strategy formation focuses on hard facts to make deductions. the various premises of the Positioning School are that the context environment of any organization is often competitive and economic, strategies are key identifiable positions in the industry and they are generic, the process of strategy formation therefore involves selecting the best generic position based on analytical computation, and that these strategies are driven by market structures and industrial conditions which in turn drive the structure of the organization (Mintzberg, et al, 1998).

Waves of development of the Positioning School
The first wave in the development of this school of thought was characterized by military planning and strategy dating back over two millennia. It was mainly influenced by Sun Tzu's and von Cluasewitz influential works on optimal strategy positioning during a battle (pp. 87). The second wave in the development of Positioning School was the Consultant's search for imperatives that would align a specific strategy positions to the organizations context. This school was characterized by development of various tools and models of analysis such as the Boston Consulting Group ...
