Therefore, first, the fatty acid is coupled to CoA producing an fatty acyl-CoA. This reaction is catalyzed by an outer mitochondrial membrane enzyme called acyl-CoA synthetase. But these fatty acyl-CoAs can't pass through the membrane either.
