H. pylori is a bacterium that is capable avoiding acidic environments of the stomach. In order to actually survive in such acidity where many bacteria would simply perish, H. pylori burrows itself into the mucus layer lining the stomach. Unlike other bacteria that less successfully stay in the mucus layer, H. pylori expersses adhesin proteins which allow it to more successfully bind to the epithelial cells, where pH is much closer to neutral. It also expresses hydrogenase, which oxidizes H2 released by other bacteria in order to harness energy.
