Solution Summary

This is a four-part question dealing with the concept of mitosis and meiosis. The solution to the four questions provides the answers and some background to help understand the concepts. Some links to websites that provide additional information to help broaden your understanding is provided. In addition, a link to a recent peer-reviewed article showing some recent developments in the study of cell cycle and division is included. This article shows that there is still a lot more to discover by scientists in understanding the mechanism of mitosis and meiosis.

1. Meiosis produces four cells from a single parent cell, whereas mitosis produces only two. So there are two successive divisions in meiosis (meiosis I and meiosis II) and a single division in mitosis. Basically, in mitosis, diploid cells replicate chromosomes during S phase (as discussed in point 2 below) and segregate sister chromatids during M phase, so that diploid daughter cells are produced. In meiosis, two chromosome-segregation phases, meiosis I and meiosis II, follow a single round of DNA replication during the premeiotic S phase.

2. The four (4) phases of the cell cycle are: G1, S, G2, and M.
G1 = growth and preparation of the chromosomes for replication;
S = synthesis of DNA and duplication of the centrosome;
G2 = preparation for the next phase "M"
M = mitosis.

3. Cell cycle and cell division are often used interchangeably. I ...
