Case Study Scenarios
Select one case from the following two options as the focus of your project:
Alex
Alex, 44, is a biracial male, married with two children (ages 2 and 4). His mother is Caucasian and his father is African American. His mother stayed at home to raise him and his three siblings. His father, the first African American to earn his doctorate degree in Linguistics, was a professor at a small-town college and made a modest income.
He is well educated with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology. He values work but also enjoys spending time with his wife and children. He grew up traveling and hopes to be able to continue that lifestyle.
He has a history of working in construction, building small log cabins, churches, and eventually private vacation homes. He also gained a great deal of experience working as a project manager for city construction. This included the management of multi-million dollar bonded projects such as building new schools and fire stations. He has had experience working for himself, successfully, as well as working with government agencies.
Being dissatisfied with the city he lived in, he and his family moved to another state, thinking he would be able to quickly find work. However, the slow economy has affected the building industry and he has only found limited work for the past two years. He has been working on various small remodeling projects but has not made enough connections to establish himself as well as he was in Massachusetts, his home state. Going back does not seem to be an option due to the costs of moving, and the economy is just as slow in his home town. Plus, he and the rest of the family were not happy living there as they were dissatisfied with the public school system.
The stress has been absorbed by him and his family. His wife believes he will find a good job but is not sure what direction to point him in. She has a stable job as a manager at a national grocery chain, and they have limited family support in there new state, North Carolina. She suggested he see a career counselor as she has insurance through her employer.
He is responsible and articulate. He enjoys autonomy and has a good sense of humor and looks forward to gaining some career counseling.
Naomi
Naomi, 26, is a biracial woman, single with three children (ages 2, 4, and 9). Her mother is of Latina descent and her father is African American. She did not graduate from high school but eventually earned her GED. Her mother raised her and her sister as a single parent, working the night shift at a local packaging factory.
She has struggled with obesity and has been diagnosed with type II diabetes. She has a low-average intelligence and demonstrates a professional work ethic. As long as she is able, she shows up for her work commitments. She feels lonely and wishes she had a life partner. She does have a sense of community with her church and has close ties to her family.
She entered the world of work and has had moderate success and promotion. She has worked up to consistently earning approximately $30,724 annually. Her jobs have always been primarily around customer service. Her boss is understanding. So, if her children are not well, she is allowed to make arrangements to take the kids to her mother's or sister's house.
She has been living from paycheck to paycheck and feels the burden when unexpected events happen. For example, when her air conditioner went out last summer in Louisiana, they went through the season without purchasing a replacement.
She has not attended college and is looking for some change. She heard about a career counseling session being put on by the local library and took the time to figure out what her future options might include. She feels fairly hopeless right now and is seeking some direction.

(1) Analyze how gender, age, culture, SES, or other characteristics may influence your relationship with the client.

Traditionally, the definition of diversity has been conceptualized by assigning people to specific categories, and determining the impact of these categories as to how people perform -such as appraisal and/or conflicts and emotions. However Corey (2005) emphasizes that the counselor is not value neutral. Thus, he or she should guard against the tendency to assume extreme positions. Therefore, his or her counseling decisions should not be influenced by factors such as age, gender or one' socio-economic status. The counselor should treat each client with dignity and respect, thereby fostering a therapeutic relationship.

The client (Naomi) in this case study is biracial. Her mother is of Latina descent and her father is African American. Bi-racial as an accepted definition of race and identity. However, it can be applied within a variety of multiracial and multiethnic backgrounds (Aldarondo, 2001). Naomi is dealing with a number of issues including: (1) lack of high school education, (2) obesity, (3) illness [diabetes], and (4) she is living from paycheck to paycheck. However, the counselor needs to have multicultural competency when working with biracial individuals and/or groups. In other words, he or she needs to be aware that bi-racial individual ...
