Since I went to Spain for Spring Break, this piece has personal relevance for me as well!

First, as you begin with a formal analysis of Pablo Picasso's Guernica, and react to its "observable properties of matter," to me, his work functions as an overall symbolic, artistic protest to the terrorism at and injustices at Guernica. This symbolism is also evident from his use of lines. For example, the shapes , forms, spaces, and bodily postures also seem to typify protestations. His use of colors, too, evoke a somber mood as he applies black, white, and gray paints.

Symbolism permeates strongly. For example, he uses flaming buildings and eroding walls also to show the misuse of power during this civil war. His texture of newspaper print seems to denote how Picasso and the world at large became aware of this tragic event.
