For this assignment, you will observe people moving and behaving in a space that you associate with a socioeconomic class different from your own. If you consider yourself a member of the lower-middle class, for example, you might observe the lifestyles of the people in a wealthier part of your town. Likewise, if you consider yourself part of the upper-middle class, you might observe people in a lower-income neighborhood or a space occupied by people living in poverty. Your choice will depend upon your own socioeconomic status and whether you decide to observe people from a higher or lower class.

I am observing a group of co workers at a barbecue. Most are Hispanic and the party was entered around food, beer and social networking. The philosophy is to cut loose after work and eat and drink and party. One point of interest is the reverse discrimination of the Hispanic boss and favoritism to other Hispanics. I was one of them and we left as soon as possible. Everyone talked in Spanish and was getting drunk. I later found out that there was a family fight between coworkers who are also family. The men all hung out together and played volleyball. I wanted to play but did not feel comfortable with the men and got dirty looks from the women. We ate and ended up avoiding everyone and left early. One woman put on a fake penis and was showing it to everyone which was funny, but really strange for a company party, in my opinion. There was a lot of joking and all the women called me "mommy" who I am now used to, but I did not talk to any of the men. One of the bosses was a black woman and I could tell she felt weird and tried to be jolly, but it was not working. We just rolled our eyes. I did feel superior to them because I could understand their humor and did not like their Mexican food.
