Why do people take advantage of the welfare system? How is this a problem in America?

People take advantage of the welfare system because of loopholes that exist for both companies and regular citizens. These loopholes allow people to circumvent the rules and to engage in illegal or unethical behavior that results in the system being abused. This occurs with corporate welfare from companies as well as with welfare for ordinary citizens. Citizens may falsely obtain money for programs such as FEMA after disasters occur, citizens may falsely obtain food stamps, sell their food stamps, and engage in other forms of welfare fraud that result in the system losing money and people who actually need the welfare not receiving welfare. Corporations routinely abuse the welfare system as well, and these are the major welfare cheats as they are able to utilize their lobbyists and influence to receive tax breaks and other forms of welfare that negatively impact the economy.

• Why should the current welfare system approach/policy option be changed?

Therefore, the current system is seen as too unorganized, disjointed, and because of these variables, the ability to actually monitor the system is impacted, which encourages the abuse of the system.

• What are recommendations for action that could slow or stop people from taking advantage of the welfare system?

Actions that could slow the abuse of the system or even stop the abuse of the system would be those that involve better oversight of the system, those actions that result in the system becoming more of a cohesive unit, and those actions that seek to provide better services to those in need of welfare ...
