They have four kids and all of them are exhibiting some type of negative behavior because of the abuse, although they never experienced any physical abuse from the father. The father spent time in jail but was accepted back by his wife. She then conceived a child, thinking that would help with the relationship and it did for a while before the abuse started again.
The mother has a history of abuse from her father. She was reared in the Bahamas, she conceived her oldest son at the age of 19. Although, her husband reared him as his own, he wouldn't let the boy go back to visit any of his people who is out of the country. The mother began to experience signs of depression because of her behavior displayed to her friends and family. She did seek counseling and convinced her husband to see a psychiatrist because of his behavior. He was diagnosed with bipolar syndrome; he was put on medication for his psychotic behaviors and began to feel better. The abuse ceased for a while, he even allowed his wife and children to travel out of the country to visit the older son's family, but once they got back, the father was passed out; he had liquor bottles in his presence and stopped taking his meds. Solution Summary

Thank you for posing this challenging problem - but in reality, it is very typical of what one would come across in the helping professions. There are many ways to look at this scenario. From what I gather, you are to write an intervention plan based upon you being the family therapist. There are many types of avenues you could go with this intervention plan. I am not sure whether it is suppose to be a formal plan or simply a discussion of what you would do, but I, however, am going to help you get through this plan and give you a direction to go in hopes that you can complete the plan based on some initial critical thinking/probing on my part.

Student,

Thank you for posing this challenging problem - but in reality, it is very typical of what one would come across in the helping professions. There are many ways to look at this scenario. From what I gather, you are to write an intervention plan based upon you being the family therapist. There are many types of avenues you could go with this intervention plan. Also, I am going to provide a basic genogram for you to use. Please know that it may not be 100% accurate and you may have additional information that you need to include in the genogram. Bowen's work with families has shown some significant benefit when employing the genogram and I believe in working with any type of family structure, the use of a genogram is the first step in understanding the composition of the family.
Now, in developing an intervention plan, I would suggest first thinking about some of the early wave models of family therapy versus the second wave models. Some of the earlier wave models will provide you with some basics of positioning the family and preparing them for the change process - for example, the use of Strategic therapy. In most families, unspoken rules govern all sorts of behaviors and helping a family be able to see where the rest of the family members feel their role is within the family will be a great starting point. *Research strategic therapy and then structural therapy to learn more about using structural components in the initial phases of the therapy.
The genogram is an assessment technique. Also, you can use individual interviews, family assessment questionnaires, and you can also conduct a perception study. A perception
study is interesting, innovative, and will bring quite a bit of insight into each family member's perceptions of each other and the family as a nuclear unit. The information you have provided obviously provides a lot of background history as to the ...
