What is MMPI? MMPI or the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory is a personality test that is most commonly used by practitioners in terms of testing for mental illness or disorders. It is objective and as a clinical instrument, useful in both employment application (to screen for candidate fit) as well as forensic psychology (to test for the ability to stand trial, insanity, etc.) and in such settings as custody and legal disputes (Cherry, 2013). Psychologists Starke R. Hathaway and psychiatrist J.C. McKinley of the University of Minnesota developed this particular tool in 1939 and fully deployed in 1943 to quantify adult psychopathology and structure of personality.
