Maddux & Winstead (2005) suggests that professionals (psychiatrists and psychologists) utilize the concept of abnormal psychology to describe conditions of psychopathology. They assert that a conception of psychopathology is based upon phenomena that are considered as either normal or abnormal behavior. However, they argue that "abnormal and normal are statistical terms with normal describing what is typical or average, and abnormal is used to describe all that deviates from what is considered typical or average" (p. 4).
Specific to psychiatry, Louttit (1941) in reviewing Muncie's book, "Psychobiology and psychiatry" argues that so-called abnormal behavior has been viewed in psychiatry to suggest that conditions associated with mania and psychoses as disease entities or clinical syndromes, and is misleading. Other scholars point to a reduction in psychiatry in efforts to conceptualize abnormal behavior. According to Savenkov (2010), the problem in psychiatry is that it has no unifying scientific theory by which to understand causes, underlying mechanisms, and treatment of mental disorders. For example, contemporary psychiatry, according to Savenkov, is "too preoccupied" with resolving the etiology (causes) of conditions such as: genetics, brain abnormality or abnormal emotions, cognition and behavior without a full understanding of psychopathological conditions.

Some legal and ethical issues related to psychiatry are outlined in Psychiatric Ethical Codes in which psychiatrists are bound by ethical codes of the medical profession as defined in the Principles of Medical Ethics of the Association, and the American Psychiatric Associations Principles of Medical Ethics.
Section 1-states that physicians shall be dedicated to providing competent medical care with compassion and respect for human dignity and rights. In accordance with the requirements of law and accepted medical practice, it is ethical for a physician to submit his or her work to peer review and to the ultimate authority of the medical staff executive body and the hospital administration and its governing body.
