Pragmatism began with the conviction that there must be a close connection between thought and action, and that thought must lead to action. Pragmatism was founded mainly to bring together the empirical tradition and the rational and idealist traditions, as a mediation between science and philosophy. It was an original American contribution to philosophy, beginning from the end of the 19th century.

The pragmatists were interested in the way thinking worked in action. Pragmatism does not exalt the practical over the theoretical. If behavior does not rest in thought, it lacks a necessary component. Peirce coined the word pragmatism to emphasize that words derive their meanings from actions.
