Similarities and differences between functions & linear eqn.
1. What similarities and differences do you see between functions and linear equations studied in chapter 3? A linear equation can have one, two, three or more variables and functions are expressed by using math symbols such as y is the output and x is the input.
Are all linear equations functions? Yes, unless the functions equal a vertical line.
Is there an instance in which a linear equation is not a function? Support your answer. If x=constant (a real number) which would make a vertical line.
Create an equation of a nonlinear function and provide two inputs for your classmates to evaluate.
xy = 1
x + y = 2
2. Can I ask you how this equation is a nonlinear function? Do the two inputs need to be even or odd? Does the xy= have to be an odd number? I'm just curious....
3. What is the difference between domain and range?
The domain is the run portion of the equation or how far it goes out=x.
The range is the rise portion of an equation or how far it moves up or down=y.
Describe a real life situation that could be modeled by a function.
Fueling your vehicle and getting MPG from the amount put in the tank to how many miles it goes before empty.
