To the extent possible, I do believe that the United States is prepared for national emergencies. With Hurricane Katrina, we were able to identify many of our short-comings with regard to government and national responses to big emergencies. We have found ways to hold local, state, and national response teams and government officials for their responses or lack-thereof. To prove that we have in fact improved our responses and our ability to keep our officials accountable for their responses, we can look at last year's fire season throughout the West. Many people lost their homes, many people were evacuated from their neighborhoods and placed in mass population shelters, and many required government help to rebuild their lives after the fires. Not only did we have more than enough help on-site in terms of fire-fighters, medical help, etc., but our shelters were significantly better run. There was constant news coverage and ...
