Jimmy Carter deviated its policy of containment towards idealism. United States supported Shah of Iran inspite of his human rights violations in Iran. Americans were well aware that support of Iran was vital for their interests in the middle east. US continued to give military assistance to Iran. A growing dissatisfaction and unrest in Iran promted US to change its stance. Shan had to leave Iran and opposition came to power. Ayatollah Khomeini took the lead in establishing an Islamic rule in Iran. The relations between US and Iran worsened when students backed by Ayatollah Khomeini took the embassy personnel as hostages. Clinton in 1990s followed a policy of dual containment of both Iran and Iraq. US supported Saddam Hussein against the post revolutionary Islamic government of Iran during Iran-Iraq war (1980-88). Saddam Hussein within a short time acted against the interest of US and started the First Gulf war. There started strategic relations between Israel and United States.
