QUANTUM STATES

According to the Schrodinger atomic model, each quantum state of an atom or ion can be labelled using two quantum numbers n and l.

(i) What is the formula for the energy of each of the quantum states of the hydrogen-like boron ion?

(ii) For a given value of n, state how the number of quantum states depends on the value of the second quantum number l.

(iii) Using rule above, calculte how many 3s, 3p and 3d quantum states there are for the hydrogen-like boron ion.

(iv) Why are there no 3f quantum states in a hydrogen-like atom?
