The Presidential election of 1816 put an end to the Federalist Party. The Jeffersonian republicans totally dominated the national politics of the country. The period of James Monroe (1817-23) was therefore, known as the era of good feelings. The era began with the goodwill tour of the president towards North, where he was greeted warmly by the people. It was known as the era of good feelings because Monroe enjoyed great support due to one party domination and America felt great morale after the War of 1812.
