First, as one of America's most prominent female poets and famous recluses, Emily Dickinson was known for her isolated, quirky, and eccentric lifestyle. She was formally schooled and also a bit of an early feminist as she opposed marriage. This rebellious attitude is clearly exhibited in her "wife poems," for example.
