Inappropriate Behavior and Conflict

Inappropriate participation can be very problematic. We can help Online TAs manage conflict and other inappropriate behavior. We understand that every Online TA has an individual and distinct style of providing academic assistance. Still, during the course of providing the solution to a posted solution, friction could arise due to student’s dissatisfaction with the solution. This should not be construed as an insult or an indication of Online TA’s lack of problem-solving skills.

Conflict can potentially result from a difference between the teaching style of Online TA and learning style of the student. For example, a student posts a numerical problem and expects the Online TA to work out the complete solution down to the final answer. On the other hand, an Online TA might believe that providing a step-by-step explanation of the concept interspersed with useful comments on the trickier part of the solution would be more helpful for the learning process of the student. This difference in thinking can leave the student disappointed and Online TA indignant. However, no one is to be blamed. The concerned Online TA should contact us immediately and explain the situation. Managing communication and conflict resolution is an important part of the duties of BrainMass’ representatives. Our course of action would be to contact the student and discuss the situation with him and arrive at a mutually agreeable decision.

Feedback and assessment is of vital importance in maintaining a healthy relationship between BrainMass, Online TAs and students. This is why we incorporated the option where the students could grade the solutions provided by the Online TAs. Management and facilitation of online learning is the sole purpose of our services. There is no scope for bullying, insult or intimidation. At the same time, we need the students to keep using our services and trust our judgment.
