I am having difficulty understanding net ionic equations. Below are the problems.
In solving these, the idea is to
a) Get the correct formulas from the names, using known or provided charges.
b) These are double displacement reactions and they follow the pattern:
AB + CD AD + CB (note that the cation is always written first). TAKE ONLY ONE OF EACH ION TO THE PRODUCT SIDE!
c) The correct formula for the resulting salts is found by using the same method as in part 1.
d) The solid formed (if applicable), is found using solubility rules or a solubility chart.
e) The reaction is balanced.
f) The reaction is split into ions (except for the solid, because solids do not form ions). This is the full ionic equation.
g) Spectator ions (ions not involved in forming the solid) are cancelled leaving the net ionic equation.
1.) Sodium Phosphate + Cobalt II Nitrate
a) Na+ PO43- + Co2+ NO3 -
Na3PO4 + Co(NO3)2
b) Na3PO4 + Co(NO3)2 ---> Co2+ PO43- + Na+NO3-
c) Na3PO4 + Co(NO3)2 ---> Co3 (PO4)2 + NaNO3
d) Na3PO4 + Co(NO3)2 ---> Co3 (PO4)2(s) + NaNO3
e) 2 Na3PO4 + 3 Co(NO3)2 ---> Co3 (PO4)2(s) + 6 NaNO3
f) Count the ions...
6 Na+ + 2 PO43- + 3 Co2+ + 6 NO3- ---> Co3 (PO4)2 + 6 Na+ + 6 NO3-
g) 6 Na+ + 2 PO43- + 3 Co2+ + 6 NO3- ---> Co3 (PO4)2 + 6 Na+ + 6 NO3-
3 Co2+ + 2 ...
