What is the Lockwood case and why is it important?

Discuss how existing federal laws prohibiting job discrimination based on gender, pregnancy or disability can protect caregivers as well. Be specific.

Courts are increasingly becoming more family-friendly in their court case decisions. Please discuss.

What types of employer actions are needed to ensure that family responsibilities discrimination doesn't take place? Please give specific employer examples.

What is the Lockwood case and why is it important?

Lockwood case relates to Dena Lockwood of Chicago. Her daughter Lily has a nasty case of pinkeye. She called in sick for one day and explained to her manager that telling her that 4-year-old's sickness required her to stay back home. She was fired. Dena Lockwood felt that she had been discriminated against because she had children and decided to take her case to Chicago Commission on Human Relations. This was a city agency that was responsible for enforcing polices on employee discrimination. There was three years of litigation and the Commission decided in favor of Dena Lockwood and awarded more than $215,000 in damages and a substantial amount in attorney fees. The case showed Dena Lockwood that the firm she had worked for showed several signs that there was discrimination based on sex.

The implication of this case is that administrative agencies will award damages where firms have violated discrimination laws. During ...
