Choose three works of art that are from the same time period or style and that have a similar theme. Works must come from one of the styles or time periods that we study in Unit 4 or Unit 5. (Examples of styles are: Baroque, Romantic, Impressionist, German Expressionist, Cubist, Abstract Expressionist, Pop Art, and Post Modern).

be a 1200-1500 word critical essay about the three works of art you have chosen. The goals of a critical essay are to evaluate and analyze the art works based on research, using the vocabulary and concepts you have learned. Your attitude should be detached. The "critical" aspect of the essay refers to this detached attitude, not whether you react positively or negatively to the works. Your essay must include the following points:

A description of the works including the style.
A summary of the artists' personal philosophies of art (if they can be found in published sources), the prevailing trends and schools of thought in the art world at the time and in the place the artist was working. For instance, what was going on in the artists' city, country, church, that the artist or the people around him/her may have been reacting to. Any other information that might help the reader understand why the artists made the choices they did and where they were "coming from."

An explanation of how the works fit into the context of the time period.
Compare the three works in terms of form, content, and subject matter. Using the terminology and concepts that you have learned in the course, explain the similarities and differences in the styles of the works and the context in which they were made. Compare and contrast their aesthetic qualities and symbolic significance, as well as the artists' points of view. Your personal point of view that you have developed throughout the paper will be summarized here. As with the preceding three sections, you will write in your own words, supported by research.
You should quote the sources internally in your paper, include a reference page at the end of the paper, and attach copies of the 3 works of art at the end of the paper. Note: Make certain your paper conforms to the requirements of the APA format, including internal citation. For additional information and resources on APA, visit the APA section of the Library, available under "Library Features."

Submit the following with your draft:

A fully developed rough draft of the assigned portions of the essay, including a title, introductory paragraph (introduction) with a thesis statement, body, and conclusion (use APA formatting, including double-spacing);

Appropriate in-text citations and a References list (use APA formatting).

Choose works "with a similar theme"; choose three works from the same artist, or three works with the same subject matter (St. Sebastian, for example), or by artists of the same general time period, or three works with a similar theme (such as tragedy). It''s important that the three works you choose have something in common

The Virgin and child enthroned with saints is a Rubens painting on wood, it is a sketch for a large altar painting. In Baroque tradition there is great exuberance in the painting, the lines are very clear and the meaning obvious. On an altar this would create the impression of grandeur. There are several human beings that adorn the painting giving a splendid look. The Christ and Saint John with Angels is a large paining in Baroques style. There very little apparel on the key figures and style is imposing. This painting has been influenced by the Roman Catholic Church that used to promote Baroque paintings. Finally, the Madonna in a Garland of Flowers is a Baroque style painting by Rubens that reflects his portrait art. The religious influence that is widespread in Rubens works can be seen in this picture as well. Each of these paintings reflects the essentials of the Baroque art.
