The Washington monument in Washington, DC is an obelisk of approximately 555 feet in height set on 106 acres on the West end of the mall. It was dedicate in 1885. Congress had passed a law for an equestrian statue of George Washington by architect Pieree L'enfant but Washington objected to the statue, so plans for it were dropped until 1832 when a private group again took up the goal of creating a monument to honor the nation's first President.
